    Higher Education (HE) teaching practices have evolved over the last twenty years, with more emphasis on student-centered pedagogy. There is an increased expectation placed onto the role that technology can play to harness effective learning. However, one could argue that there remains disconnect between our ambition for interactive learning through technology and the realities of our practice (Roblyer et al, 2010). This study explores the concept of interactive learning by focusing upon a specific use of mobile and portable technology.     This collection consists primarily of anti-integration propaganda circulated by the Little Rock, Arkansas Capital Citizens’ Council (CCC) to Little Rock families, like the Carlands from 1957 to 1962. The contents include newsletters, booklets, business cards, and the police record of Daisy Bates, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s (NAACP) Arkansas state president. The propaganda from the CCC provides deep insight into the strained race relations in Arkansas, but also throughout the South as the CCC included newspaper articles from states other than Arkansas. There are also newspaper clippings and photographs that Carland acquired over the years pertaining to interracial relations in the South. These items pay particular attention to the federal mandate to desegregate public schools and the subsequent decision to close public schools in Little Rock from 1958 to 1959.     This collection consists primarily of papers collected by Gary T. Hawbaker from his time as a prospective student up to his graduation from Gettysburg College in 1966. One particular area of strength in this collection is course materials. It includes papers, notes, and blue book exams for almost all of Hawbaker’s courses each semester and provides a snapshot of the history, education, and general curriculum of the early to mid-1960s. It is worth noting that while Hawbaker was a student, Gettysburg College’s fall semester extended into January and the spring semester extended into May. The rest of the collection contains materials pertaining to outside the classroom, some Hawbaker received from the College as a student, others as an alumnus. These materials range from letters, yearbooks, textbooks, photographs of events, programs from events, a bowling ball and bowling ball case, and jackets that carry the Gettysburg College emblem Together, this collection provides a complete look at what Hawbaker’s undergraduate career looked like.     Using social media to enhance learning and teaching

    Social media has grown from its original conceptualisation and as it is realised today, it may offer a new construct to enhance learning and teaching. Greenhow and Gleason (2012) explore the use of Twitter and suggest that it may lead to increased engagement and better interaction between students and teachers. A similar view is held by Fusch, who explores the possibility that the resources at our disposal are as important as the learning intentions and that indeed, resources are needed which promote social communication, create a more interactive learning experience and promote collaboration amongst peer groups and staff (2011). The paper offers a synthesis of international literature and draws conclusions from a recent study carried out within The University of Glasgow. Crucially, it will explore the students’ perception and expectations on social media interaction within the context of their learning experience

    The School of Education (SofE) recognises the importance of promoting opportunities for students and staff to engage with each other. Higher Education (HE) has been transformed over the last twenty years and the change from teacher-centred pedagogy to a more student-centred approach has been widely adopted (O’Neill and McMahon, 2005). The SofE provides a rich and diverse curriculum of study across a range of degree programmes. We have established a staff and student partnership which has seen a refreshed focus on the student, where their voice is influential in what they learn. This has been the emphasis of many researchers in the past. Both Rogers (1983) and Burnard (1999) illustrate that this is essential in establishing and maintaining student-centred learning.     Observation of a cascaded process in intracavity terahertz optical parametric oscillators based on lithium niobate

    Cascaded difference frequency generation has been observed in intracavity optical parametric oscillators based on bulk lithium niobate and producing nanosecond pulses of terahertz radiation. Two idler waves are generated, namely: the primary idler wave associated with the parametric down conversion process itself; and a secondary idler wave, due to difference frequency generation. Experimental investigations of the frequency, temporal evolution, propagation direction, intensity, phase matching and oscillation threshold of the generated down-converted waves are reported. The overall generation efficiency for the terahertz radiation is enhanced, thereby overcoming the Manley-Rowe limit. Advantages of the present approach over schemes based on periodically poled lithium niobate are identified.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
